I was lucky enough to attend an Austrian tasting held by The Corkscrew in Thornton’s Restaurant recently. On show were wines by Johannes Hirsch from Kamptal and Fritz Wieninger, one of the few winemakers in Vienna. Both biodynamic……two charismatic, passionate, energetic winemakers. Their dedication to quality and purity is overwhelming, apparent from the first nose to the last sip. Wines of this caliber are the reason I am so passionate about this industry. The beauty and elegance these wines show is what wine is meant to be all about. We had four flights, twelve wines in total to taste. All delicious, four of which I especially adored:
Weingut Wienginger Wienner Gemischter Satz DAC 2014
The nose reminded me of walking through the orchard beside my house on a crisp spring day with hints of apples, gooseberry and white blossom prevalent in the air.
It’s an unusual type of wine known as a field blend – all the different grapes are grown together in the same vineyard then harvested and vinified at the same time. The palate was clean with some complexity to it. Apples, mineral with a touch of spice. The elegance of this wine was truly amazing, perhaps my favorite wine on the day.
€18.50 available from The Corkscrew. I highly recommend it.
Weingut Wienginger Nussberg Riesling 2013
This wine has a ripe nose of blossoms with just a flicker of apple, peaches and some delicate minerality.
The lightly honeyed palate showed some citrus nuances with stone fruit characteristics carrying into the length. A delicious wine you can enjoy either now or later.
€28.50 Available from The Corkscrew.
Weingut Hirsch Kammerner Lamm Grüner Veltliner 2013
On the nose this wine was slightly gnarly with touches of lambs lettuce, lovely spring floral characteristics such as pansies and daisies curled with a delicate aroma of mandarins.
On the palate there was a lovely clean bite of lemon which sang beautifully throughout. It is a well-structured, elegant and truly beautiful wine that would add a sparkle to any occasion.
€47.95 Available from The Corkscrew.
Weingut Wienginger Pinot Noir Grand Select 2011
This wine has a seductive nose, a light touch of berries, wild strawberries mixed with touches of pastilles layered with leather. Animal aromas add to that in addition to hints of roses, tobacco leaf and tobacco.
This is a wine with a serious nose which follows elegantly onto the palate. It is clean and dances seductively on the tongue. A refined silkiness delivers the mature blueberries, blackberries, wild strawberries and leather to what is an outstanding wine. Definitely a wine not to be missed.
