A Von Winning Afternoon

A gloriously crisp day in Dublin overlooking the beautiful but bare St. Stephens Green Park from the lush surroundings of Thornton’s Restaurant. This could not be a better setting nor indeed not a greater opportunity to taste some fine German wines. Not perhaps the first country you think of when it comes to sauvignon blanc but the creative people from Von Winning have done an excellent job by creating some of the best I have tasted in a very long time.

Founded in 1849 in Deidesheim, there is a long history here dedicated to creating top quality wines. Working closely with the vines has led to some seriously good quality wine from their entry level to their premium.

We tasted fourteen wines in total, spoilt rotten, yes! I again have chosen a selection from my notes though if you are eager for the rest do let me know…

This wine had a lovely delicate aroma of yellow stone fruits, light minerality and spice with a touch of exoticness to it.

The nose followed through onto the palate with infinite freshness. Quite an elegant little number and would definitely go with some healthy Asian cuisine.

€19.95 available from The Corkscrew.

On the nose this wine was rich with a medley of beautiful aromas. Citrus, peaches, mandarin blossom touched with a delicate minerality.

All of this followed through with a hint of stewed lemons and salinity to it. It was a supple and well-structured wine finishing with some lovely floral elements. A real treat for the senses!.

€39.95 available from The Corkscrew.

Now this wine had a big beautiful nose of soft ripe lemon, orange zest with a savory character added for good measure. It really was quite layered.

The palate felt a touch exotic with some stony minerality in the background, ripe lemon and touches of mandarin in the forefront and a saline undertone which just added a beautiful touch to a long length.

€42.95 available from The Corkscrew.

This wine was just outstanding on the nose – my first reaction was wow! Following that the nose was vibrant, stony minerality, touch of meatiness to it. Oak, brown sugar with a hint of butter warming in the pan.

On the palate this wine did not disappoint, it was juicy, savoury, meaty with a lick of smoke to elevate it into the bold, beautiful wine it is, a somewhat wild but well executed take on sauvignon blanc.

€29.95 available from The Corkscrew.

A truly delicate autumnal wine. On the nose it was earthy with red berries, a flicker of dark chocolate with a subtle wildness through it.

This wine has great structure, it is a sophisticated take on berries with earthy and leather characteristics wrapping around gently to produce a wild but darling pinot.

€19.95 available from The Corkscrew.

A big thank you to Von Winning team, The Corkscrew and to Thornton’s. An afternoon not to be beaten…
